Black&Lights is an interactive light display, inspired and built around an Outrenoir Painting from Pierre Soulages.

This physical experience is an illustration of the relation between Light, Observer and Painting and its importance in the work of Soulages. Observer position is tracked in realtime and influence the lighting on the painting.

Two light systems surrounds the Outrenoir. The first one, a suspended half-circle of spots, permits a variation between front and lateral lighting. The second one consist of grazing lights, moving along the side of the painting, revealing its landforms.

This project was part of the exhibition Noir, c’est noir ? at EPFL, a retrospective about Pierre Soulages, and has been visited by 23’000 people during a three month period.

Clients were EPFL and the GANDUR foundation for art. We had the exigent task of having to speak both languages: scientific and artistic.
